John Cottrell is a Bristolian, born in 1939, is married to Sue and has three sons and seven grandchildren. Both his parents were Bristolians and were themselves children of Bristolians, so he is Bristolian through and through. His grandfather was Lord Mayor of Bristol in 1944-45. The sword he now wears with court dress was his grandfather’s and before that was worn by his grandfather’s second cousin, Francis Cowlin, who was Sheriff of Bristol in 1921.
John was educated at Clifton College and Balliol College, Oxford where he read Modern History. On qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1965, he joined E.S. & A. Robinson Holdings (subsequently DRG). In 1969 he joined his father in a family company manufacturing decorative products and industrial chemicals. He retired as Chairman in 1994.
He then took an M.A. in Medieval Studies at Bristol University, followed by a Ph.D. which he completed in 2000. From 2002-06 he was a Special Lecturer in the Department of Historical Studies concentrating on Britain and Europe in the Middle Ages.

2004-05 President, Anchor Society
He is currently:
• Divisional President, St John Ambulance, Bishopston
• Member of St John Ambulance Council, Avon
• Member of Executive Committee, National Association of Almshouses
• Director of Anchor Society Ltd.
• Trustee of Bristol Area Stroke Foundation, Lady Haberfield’s Almshouse, and National Eye Research Council
• Founding Trustee of Making the Change, a charity formed to provide accommodation and training for independent living for young people leaving prison.
He is a member of Filton Golf Club.
