County News

2011/2012
My first few months as High Sheriff of Leicestershire have been incredibly busy and I am assured that there will be little change in this, particularly as the festive season approaches, and I am delighted to be able to be making so many visits and attending so many engagements.

As the first Sikh High Sheriff in Leicestershire I am grateful for the opportunity the role gives me to meet new people and spread the message of cultural understanding to members of the community who are sometimes harder to reach. I have received a warm reception and welcome wherever I have gone and have enjoyed support and friendship from the Leicestershire community.

An introduction to HRH The Princess Royal, when she visited the Charnwood Citizens Advice Bureau, marked an excellent start to my Year. Further highlights of my Year so far have included attending the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, when I met HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. I was delighted, too, to have the opportunity to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu when he came to the University of Leicester to receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters. It has also been a privilege to take part in celebrations of achievement, from attending degree graduation ceremonies to presenting awards to local Scouts.

I have relished the opportunities that I have had to visit so many hard-working organisations, including the Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland Air Ambulance, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and Leicestershire Police. We have highly skilled and well-organised people who provide the backbone to making our County so trouble-free and harmonious. Never was this so put to the test as when the riots happened in the summer. There was a small amount of disturbance in our city but the situation was handled promptly, efficiently and professionally and as a result damage to buildings and indeed people remained very minimal.

It has been particularly interesting to work alongside law enforcement in the County and I have gained a great insight into our judiciary system.

During my year in office I will be supporting a number of fundraising events to raise funds for Crimebeat, which in Leicestershire is used to fund the Warning Zone, an excellent educational facility that teaches young people about risk, consequences of actions, peer pressure and personal responsibility. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to a Wine Tasting evening with food and entertainment, and I am grateful to the local businesses in Leicestershire who are supporting these initiatives.

My time as High Sheriff of Leicestershire is enabling me to meet many members of the community and extend my contacts, to establish a strong network that I will keep in touch with after my Year has ended, so that I can continue my work to support and raise funds for worthy charitable causes. o
