Surrey – High Sheriff Youth Awards
Every High Sheriff in Surrey in recent years has actively supported the High Sheriff Youth Awards (HSYA). In effect, he or she acts as the charity’s CEO during the Shrieval Year. Past High Sheriffs are appointed as Trustees for at least three years, and often for up to six years.
Established in 1993 by the then High Sheriff, Sir Peter Anson, the HSYA gives financial support to groups of young people in Surrey who are involved in activities and projects which either reduce or prevent crime and so make their communities more secure. That is why the strapline of the charity is: ‘Helping young people make Surrey safer’.
Individual grants range from £50 up to £2,000. In the year ended 31st March 2011 the scheme
awarded 60 grants totalling £60,854 and benefited over 7,000 young people across the county. To the end of January 2012, 30 projects had received £45,530, with a maximum grant allocation of £55,000 for the Shrieval Year of Professor Michael Joy, OBE.
The HSYA is itself generously sponsored by Surrey County Council and the Boroughs and Districts; P&G (Procter & Gamble), The Peter Harrison Foundation, Surrey Police and
ExxonMobil.
